What is "Stock Photography"

A simple answer is "It's photos that are held as 'stock' to sell for commercial use".  Look around your in your daily life - magazine articles that have a picture of a father and child playing, or billboards with someone with a funny expression, travel brochures, book covers, album covers, MicroSoft(tm) clip art...the possibilities are endless.  Tens of thousands of photographers around the globe submit pictures that represent "concepts" or other emotions that can be used in advertising or any of the aforementioned uses to agencies, like Getty Images, and these agencies in turn have millions of clients looking for pictures that best fit their needs.
